19thC Victorian Knights Order of the Garter Hand Carved Wood Pediment. Superb large carved Victorian pediment with Victorian crowned badge with motto within laurels of oak leaves. Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense. (Shame on Him Who Thinks Evil of It). The Most Noble Order of the Garter , English order of knighthood was founded by King Edward.

Ranked as the highest British civil and military honour obtainable. Because the earliest records of the order were destroyed by fire, it is difficult for historians to be certain of its original purposes, the significance of its emblem, and the origin of the orders motto. One theory is that Edward III wished to revive the Round table of Arthurian legend.

The order was established to commerorate an incident in which Edward was dancing when one of his partners blue garters dropped to the floor. As bystanders snickered, Edward gallantly picked up the garter and put it on his own leg, admonishing the courtiers in French with the phrase that remains the orders motto, Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shame to him who thinks evil of it, popularly rendered as Evil to him who evil thinks). Has a nice aged deep warm patina showing through and appears to be mahogany or similar. Overall very good antique condition.

There are some odd minor losses, marks, nicks, scratches etc with age appropiate wear nothing major, but noted and does not detract in anyway from this truly amazing piece. (please enlarge and view all photos). Stunning when displayed from all angles..
