Antique Odd Fellows Heart in Hand Stick Pin Georgian Victorian Fraternal Masonic

Description: Up for sale is this rare, 19th century, Odd Fellows, heart in hand stick pin. It features a tiny, gold metal locket with a chased design around the glass on the front. Contained within the locket is an even tinier gold-colored hand with a red heart in the center.

The hand is set against a red background. It's a well-loved piece that is beautiful despite the wear. The gold locket case is probably gold-filled or it may be very low karat gold but it does not test for 10K. Antique jewelry with this motif is highly collectible and hard to come by, so don't let this one pass you up. The box is not included. It's been in my personal collection for a few years and since my collection is growing, I thought I'd give it a run to see if there is someone out there who will appreciate it as much as I have. Background: According to the American Folk Art Museum, The heart in hand symbol is widely recognized for its association with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows... The heart in hand incorporates values of candor, frankness, and sincerity, as well as the lesson that'whatever the hand finds to do, the heart should go forth in wisdom. It features in the ritual teachings for the Second, or Love Degree, and when mounted on a staff, was carried by the Conductor as he led initiates and visitors around the lodge. It was also used as the symbol of the Past Grand.

Mystery and Benevolence: Masonic and Odd Fellows Folk Art from the Kendra and Allan Daniel Collection. New York: American Folk Art Museum, 2016. Materials: Gold-colored metal locket, gold-colored metal pin, glass, gold-colored hand, red paint or enamel, silver-colored solder. Measurements: Total length is approximately 2 1/4 inches. The locket measures approximately 9mm x 11 mm.

Date estimate: First half of the 19th century. Late Georgian Era or Early Victorian Era. Please consider that unless a piece is hallmarked with the date, the date estimate is just that, an estimate.

Origin: Potentially American, otherwise European. Condition: As mentioned above, it's a well-loved piece. General wear to the locket encasement. The pin is crooked and there is wear to the glass locket crystal. There is an area that has been repaired with silver-colored solder seen on the front in photos but this is not as obvious to the naked eye unless you're looking for it since the locket is so tiny and the photos are highly magnified to show defects. Please use the photos as a guide as they form part of the description and the condition of a piece is subjective.
