Antique Victorian C1880 hand-made cream lace tatting parasol folding stem handle

A very charming antique parasol with hand made lace cover. Folding parasols were most popular during the later 1800s but were still in use after the turn of the centuary into pre WW1 era. The stem folds in half to make it easy to carry and when The Victorians were travelling abroad these folding parasols were at their most popular as they could be folded away into a case or travelling bag.

This is an exceptionally pretty example. The handle is carved whale or ox bone - with an elegant hand carved stem in a single piece with ball shaped carved end and two smaller carved bands on the smooth handle. The handle is joined to the shaft with a folding joint fitted with a brass hinge.

There is a brass sliding tube to fix the stem and handle once the parasol is opened. The cover is cream silk lace - made by tatting. Tatting is fine open lace work made with the use of a tatting pin or shuttle. In German it is called Occhi - and in Italian Chiaccierino. The tatting is cream coloured in a delicate pattern of circles and bow shapes in a fine open work pattern.

There are hours of work to create such a pretty cover. At the top the cover is held in place by a small finial which matches the handle. The parasol is lined with cream silk. This pretty parasol is in very good condition for its age with only very minor signs of wear. There are some slight splits in the silk lining and I would suggest that the parasol is only opened part way to protect the silk lining.

The cream lace is very good condition with one feint spot of slight discolouration only very minor and otherwise lace is excellent condition. A lovely item for collectors, anyone with interest in old lace. Can be used for a bride or to complete a Victorian Costume.
