Antique Victorian Gothic Revival Intricately Hand-Carved Oak Mystery Puzzle Box / Casket. Very high quality with beautifully carved Gothic Revival panels to five sides in aged Golden Oak. The box has an oak base and stands on four small rectangular raised feet.
The inside is paper lined. The front of the box is fitted with two well patinated brass clasps which cannot be unlocked or released and there are three brass semi concealed hinges to the rear.
The lid is in fact hinged to the front by two small concealed hinges and the box is designed to be opened from the back. The locking mechanism is the central rear faux hinge which when depressed activates the lid release mechanism and opens the box (see photos). The locking mechanism is not as tight as it should be, but none the less the box is in very good overall condition for its age with the original polished finish.
