Antique 1792 Lion Of Lucerne Monument Carved "Black Forest" Version of a Walnut Wood Wall Plaque Relief Sculpture Circa 1890. The Lion Of Lucerne was Created by Bertel Thorvaldsen as a Memorial to The Members of The Swiss Guards Who Were Killed Defending the Royal Family of France During The French Revolution in 1792. This Item Shows Very Light Wear And Remains in Excellent Displayable Condition.

I Know There Have Been Many Second Rate Productions of This Iconic Swiss Monument, But the Detail on This Sculpture is Certainly of a 19th Century Master Craftsman. This Heartwrenching structure was Inaugurated in the year 1821, and While it was Originally Private Property, It Was taken Over by The City in 1882.

The Latin Inscription Translates to "The Loyalty and Courage of the Swiss People". The Monument was Described by Mark Twain as "The Most Mournful and Moving Piece of Stone in the World". 9 1/2" X 12 " X 2.
