This beautifully hand-decorated box features a traditional black lacquer ground with rich gilt scrolling arabesque borders and a central figural cartouche depicting a stag or deer in landscape - a classic motif of Kashmiri export lacquerware produced for the British colonial market. The box is constructed of lacquered papier-mâché or wood with original brass hinges and a fully lacquered interior. The gilded decoration is entirely hand-applied, not printed, showing fine linework consistent with 19th-century craftsmanship. The interior lid retains a small original hand-applied gilt flourish typical of 19th-century Kashmiri lacquer workshop decoration, further confirming its hand-crafted antique origin. These Anglo-Indian lacquer boxes were highly sought after during the Victorian period and are now collectible decorative arts pieces, ideal for jewelry storage, desk display, or antique decor.

Origin: Anglo-Indian / Kashmir export ware. Materials: Lacquered papier-mâché or wood, gilt decoration, brass hinges. Decoration: Hand-painted gilt scrollwork with central animal scene. Antique condition consistent with age.

Surface wear and gilt loss present from over a century of use. Hinges intact and box opens/closes properly. Authentic age wear, please see photographs for condition.
