There are peach colored tones on the surface of the carved figure. Light passes through the shell background nicely.
This cameo was originally created as a brooch and retains its original pin on the back. The lever safety clasp is consistent with vintage 1900 brooches. I had a jeweler add a simple solid gold bale so that I could wear it as a necklace as well. This is a timeless piece. The chain is vintage 1980's and marked "14 K and HMS".
It is 16 inches in length. Shell cameos, relatively new in the history of cameos, became popular six- to seven-hundred years ago during the Renaissance but the height of their popularity occurred during the Victorian era. Victorians, especially British Victorians, were enamored of Italy and all things Italian including cameos. Travelers to Italy bought and wore cameos as a sign of their social status.
