Antique Victorian Tear Catcher LACHRYMATORY Hand Blown Glass Mourning Bottle

For your consideration is this beautiful antique Victorian tear catcher bottle. This one was made in the mid 1800s and measures 6 inches long. It is made of hand blown glass and has four grooves cut into opposing sides and these are decorated with a gilded cross hatched design. There is some loss to the gilding, but it is otherwise in excellent condition. The tradition of Lachrymatory bottles span eons.

There is even mention in the Old Testament when David prays to God Thou tallest my wanderings, put thou my tears in Thy bottle; are they not in Thy book? This psalm is estimated to be written about 1020 BC. Tear bottles were a very popular addition to Greek and Egyptian tombs of the wealthy starting about 100 AD.

The Victorians revitalized this fad with their obsession with mourning. Tears were collected for deceased loved ones as well as loved ones that were apart for a period of time. The collected tears would be a testament to the wives devotion.
