This is an authentic 19th c glass rolling pin, hand blown and shaped, and considering it is well over 100 years old, it is in near mint condition. It is hollow, with an unpolished pontil mark on one end and an opening on the other. The intention of having a hollow form rolling pin was to be able to fill the inside with cool water, stop up the opening, and better be able to control and form the pastry. Many more common clear molded glass rolling pins were used over the decades. It was also whimsical to have a hand-made brightly colored kitchen instrument like this, which could brighten otherwise difficult tasks.

Like the glass canes and crowns made by glassblowers for parades and special events, this might have been made for a similar more whimsical purpose. The surface has numerous light scratches proving its ongoing use and age. The predominant colors of dark red and blue are encased in the clear body, the colors having been gathered on a marvering table as it was formed. It has no damage, and any inconsistencies or flaws within the glass was created by the hand forming process. It measures about 14" L x 2 1/4" diameter and weighs approx 1 pound 2 oz.
