Superb c1870s Saulini 18k Gold Hand Carved Cameo Prince Albert? Presented is a fantastic quality Italian 18 karat yellow gold cameo brooch, dating to around the 1870s. The cameo is signed for Tommaso Saulini, one of the most important and widely renowned cameo carving artists in the 19th century. The cameo is uncommonly large and finely carved, showing a man with wavy hair and sideburns in profile facing right, possibly Prince Albert.
The gold setting is likewise of extremely high quality, very well made with old pin style construction visible around the interior of the frame, and is quite heavy. The outer edge of the frame is done as a border of stylized wave decoration, nicely textured and well done. The brooch has an old C style clasp in the back. This piece is in great condition.
There is one line in the cameo in the upper left, but the cameo is still sound and this is quite minor. The setting is in great shape and the clasp is working well.
The gold is not stamped or hallmarked that we could find, but we have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee it to be 18 karat gold. The cameo is signed Saulini F. For the workshop of renowned cameo carver, Tommaso Saulini.
The cameo measures about 2 ΒΌ by 2 inches. The cameo weighs 28.5 grams, or 1 ounce.
