Two rare early American dress garments. Description from left to right. LEFT DRESS One being a 1838 American ivory silk satin gown, all hand stitched one piece in construction. The gown has a back hook and loop closures and with short sleeves with decorative ruching and beautiful small pleating. The front of bodice has beautiful skillfully done pleating. The corset bodice has 7 whale baleen stays. The waistline is decorated with pleating in front and back.

The skirt has decorative pleating front and back. The bodice and sleeves are lined with a polished off white cotton, and the skirt is unlined.

Piping around drop armscyes, and waist. Decorative piping in three "V" shape on front bodice. Recently de-accessioned from the Rochester Historical society in New York State, and still retaining its original identification museum tags as the museum's name tag. CONDITION The gown is in very good and sturdy condition with the satin being very soft. The waist line has been altered and can be seen in photos showing where the stitches used to be.

This can be repaired easily. There is no underarm discoloration found on the outside satin, but there is discoloration on the inner lining.

Few pin holes in skirt and scattered color discoloration from decades ago stains, on skirt. APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS Bust 31" Waist 21" Length of sleeves 7 Length of dress from shoulder seam to hemline in back 49-3/4.

De-accessioned from the Rochester Historical society in New York State, and still retaining its original identification museum tags as well as numbered on inside bodice. This dress has a no closures and with long gigot sleeves with upper shoulder caps and the waistline is decorated with pleating in front and back.

The front skirt waist attaches on either side with strings. Both strings have worn over time and are short. The bodice is lined with a polished tan cotton, sleeves are lined with a dark brown polish cotton and the skirt is unlined. Piping around drop armscyes, wrists, and shoulders.

The front of the bodice has no closures and has decorative pleating. The sleeves have ruching on each cuff. Brown braided trim on shoulder cap, and on both matching capes. There is no underarm discoloration, and has scattered color discoloration from decades ago stains, on a sleeve cuff as well as skirt. One of the capes has a split in the lining. None of the flaws are major and do not distract from the overall appearance of the gown. APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS Bust 32" Waist 33" Length of sleeves 26" Length of dress from shoulder seam to hemline in back 52". We do not launder or dry clean unless stated in listing, and most times have been in storage for many decades picking up old age storage oxidation spots.
