1880-90 Late Victorian Period Engagement Ring, Size 5. Hand Cut Old European Solitaire Diamond in a Buttercup Head Setting and held by 6 lovely fleur-de-lis like Prongs; 0.4 carats; H-I in Color (near colorless); SI-1 in Clarity (slight inclusions). The ring shoulder has Engraved Crescents and terminates with a Victorian Hand Theme - the "hands" present the diamond setting. Later Victorian jewels used the symbol of the hand quite prevalently, either shaking hands, clasped, or holding a symbol which would denote the nature of the piece. The hands on this sentimental beauty, of course, offer up a diamond and the promise of eternal love. Another Victorian symbol found here is the Buttercup which represents happiness, merriment, pure bliss, and glee. Themes, symbolism, and messages in jewelry were all the rage throughout the Victorian era. Antique diamonds, such as old Europeans and Mine cuts, were hand cut to increase their color and clarity. Like the old Mine cut, old European diamonds possess a high crown, small table, and a large, flat culet (no point), however, the old European cut has a circular girdle. With 58 facets, it is the predecessor of todays modern round Brilliant cut. Antique diamonds were cut for color and capture light differently, drawing the eye in rather than immediately radiating sparkle out, while modern round Brilliant diamonds, as their name suggests, are cut for brilliance. Many people prefer the sparkle and unique glow within old diamonds that gives fine antique jewelry its charm, interest, and warmth. Sadly, these old diamond cuts are relatively scarce as many were reshaped when the modern Brilliant cut became popular, yet it is the antique cuts that are so highly sought after in todays market. CONDITION: Very Good Antique condition; Some of the prongs need re-tipping (no big deal or cost); Fine surface gold wear as is to be expected on jewelry 100+ years old; No chips on the diamond - read about it in the appraisal.
