Victorian Gloved Hand Holding Flowers Mourning Brooch Black Vulcanite Faux Jet

It is a very dark brown not black.. Hinged pin and C clasp.. Hinged stamped with patent number 13124.. There is wear to the edges in the back only..

This material is not as strong as jet so has some cracks around the edges.. Not unusual for a brooch over 100 years... I believe this is a lovely example of Victorian molded Vulcanite.. Vulcanite was produced by treating natural or India rubber with sulfur, then exposing it to moderate heat...

The resultant material was elastic enough to be fashioned into the desired shape while warm but became hard and durable once cooled... Contemporary passion for innovation fueled interest in Vulcanite jewelry, and vulcanite was an affordable alternative to more expensive jet pieces.. Measures approx long approx 3/4" and 1 3/8" wide... It is unsigned and preloved.. Please see all photos as they are part of my description..
